SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma or serum


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.


Special notes: 

Specimen should be protected from light.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 1 day. Refrigerated 7 days. Frozen: 6 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.



TEST DETAILS
Reference interval: 

< 1 day: 0 - 5 mg/dL 
1-14 days: 0 - 8 mg/dL 
>= 15 days: 0 - 1.2 mg/dL 
 


Interpretation guide: 

Reference range for <15 days of age applies to infants over 35 weeks gestation. Result must be interpreted using an age-specific nomogram.


Critical values/courtesy alerts: 
Above 16.0 mg/dL for patients under the age of 1 only.

Clinical significance: 

Used in the diagnosis and treatment of liver, hemolytic, hematologic, and metabolic disorders, including hepatitis and gallbladder obstructive disease. Transient elevation in neonate after 5 days postpartum.
