SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma (platelet-poor)


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

1 mL aliquot of plasma; minimum 0.4 mL. Please submit a separate frozen aliquot for this test. It may not be combined with any other test requiring a frozen aliquot.


Special notes: 

Specimen can only be collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate tube. See Specimen Processing Instructions.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge within one hour of collection. Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial.


Transport temperature: 

Frozen. Ship frozen sample on dry ice.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: Unacceptable. Frozen (-70°C or lower): 30 days. Frozen (-20°C): 14 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Shipping room temperature or refrigerated is unacceptable. Specimen cannot be collected in a 3.8% sodium citrate tube. Gross hemolysis.

Clinical significance: 

Aids in diagnosis of congenital deficiencies characterized by recurrent venous thrombosis. Acquired deficiencies associated with Protein C include: oral anticoagulant therapy, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, malignancy, consumptive DIC, surgery, trauma, antibodies to Protein C and hepatic immaturity of the newborn.
