Renal tissue in renal biopsy kit, saline or RPMI as described below.
Special notes:
All specimens must be accompanied by a detailed clinical history of the patient. The specimen must be submitted in the proper fixative or buffer solution, depending on the sender:
- GMC Operating Rooms: Send ASAP to Surgical Pathology in a tube of saline. Store in refrigerator until processed.
- GLH, GCMC, and GWV Operating Rooms: Place renal biopsies in RPMI and transport on ice to GMC Surgical Pathology Lab.
- All other outside sites will collect renal biopsies using the renal biopsy kit for processing as follows:
- Two pieces about 1 mm in length taken from each end of the glomeruli containing core are placed in 3% glutaraldehyde for electron microscopy.
- A segment of glomeruli containing core measuring 3-6 mm in length is placed in Michel's solution for immunofluorescent microscopy.
- A segment of glomeruli containing core measuring 8-10 mm in length is placed in formalin for light microscopy.
- Any additional cores should be placed in formalin.
