PORPHYRINS, FRACTIONATED, QUANTITATIVE,24-HR URINE

5 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine, as above; minimum 5 mL.
Protect specimen from light. Collection with no preservative is acceptable, if properly refrigerated and protected from light. 24-hour total volume must be provided on the test request form.
Protect from light.
Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 1 month.
Samples received at room temperature. Samples not protected from light. Samples with pH less than 4.

Patients with hereditary forms of porphyria usually will present with profound elevations of these analytes (> 5-fold) during acute episodes. Moderate elevations (< 3-fold) are more often due to medications or environmental factors.
