SPECIMEN COLLECTION

One (1) full 6 mL EDTA tube


Special notes: 

Client Services notifies Microbiology Laboratory if client calls that specimen is en route. Transport specimen immediately to the lab for testing. 

This assay has not been evaluated for newborn screening or for the use with cord blood specimens or for use with specimens from individuals less than 12 years of age.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge. Do not aliquot.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature (15-30°C) for <48 hours or refrigerated (2-8°C).


Specimen stability: 

Stable for up to 48 hours at room temperature (15-30°C). Stable 6 days at refrigerated (2-8°C).


Rejection criteria: 

Improperly labeled/identified specimens. Specimens stored or transported beyond stability limits. Expired transport device used. Improper collection tube used. Specimen received frozen.

Negative for HIV 1 and/or 2 antibodies, Negative for HIV 1 p24 antigen.

Positive for HIV 1 and/or 2 antibodies, Positive for HIV 1 p24 antigen.

THIS TEST IS ONLY PERFORMED FOR EMPLOYEE HEALTH SERVICE, SELECTED OUTREACH CLIENTS, OBGYN PATIENTS AT DELIVERY WHEN THE HIV STATUS IS NOT KNOWN AND FOR OTHER PATIENTS WHEN APPROVED BY THE MICROBIOLOGY DOCTORAL DIRECTOR, PATHOLOGIST ON CALL OR ANALYTICAL SPECIALIST.

Test includes: 

Qualitative immunoassay to detect antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) 1 and/or 2. Test progresses to an HIV confirmation (HIVCC) at an additional charge if the results of this assay are positive. This confirmatory testing is required and performed at GMC.

Clinical significance: 

Use this test to detect antibody to HIV 1 and/or HIV 2 and HIV 1 p24 antigen. HIV 2 is endemic in West Africa and most cases in the U.S. are from West Africa or people who have traveled in that area.
