SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma or Serum


Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.


Patient preparation: 

Fasting specimen preferred.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature specimen also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 2 days. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: 3 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Decreased C4 level is associated with acute systemic lupus erythematosus, glomerulonephritis, immune complex disease, cryoglobulinemia, congenital C4 deficiency and generalized autoimmune disease.
