PHOSPHORUS

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.
Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.
Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature or frozen specimen also acceptable.
Spun SST: Room temperature: 24 hours. Refrigerated: 4 days. Frozen: 1 year. Spun PST: 12 hours.
Stability limits exceeded.
Less than 30 days: 3.9-7.7 mg/dL
30 days to 1 year: 3.5-6.6 mg/dL
1 to <4 years: 3.1-6.0 mg/dL
4 to <13 years: 3.0-5.7 mg/dL
13 years and older: 2.5-4.8 mg/dL

Phosphate, Inorganic Phosphorus, PO4, PHOS
An increased phosphorus with a decreased calcium suggests either hypoparathyroidism or renal disease. A decreased phosphorus and an increased calcium suggests hyperparathyroidism or sarcoidosis.
Decreased phosphorus and calcium may indicate malabsorption, vitamin D deficiency and renal tubular acidosis. Increased phosphorus and calcium suggest milk-alkali syndrome or hypervitaminosis D.
