SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

5 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine collection; minimum 1 mL.


Special notes: 

Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Lab personnel (to be determined per site) will test the pH of the urines and adjust to less than 3.0 using 6N HCl.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Refrigerated: 6 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Urine phosphorus: 0.3 - 1.0 gm/24 hours.
