SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Whole Blood


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

7-10 mL whole blood collected in an EDTA tube. If the platelet count is less than 20,000/ccm, submit 7-10 mL whole blood. Platelet Count: Minimum Volume = 45,000: 2 mL; 20,000-45,000: 5 mL; < 20,000: 10 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze specimens.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 6 days. Refrigerated: Unacceptable. Frozen: Unacceptable.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded, gross hemolysis, frozen specimen.

Clinical significance: 

Thrombocytopenia that is refractory to platelet transfusions may be due to direct platelet antibody. Testing is useful to differentiate immune from non-immune disorders
