SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum (preferred) or plasma.


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
6 mL dark blue-top (K2 EDTA) tube
Specimen required: 

2 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 0.7 mL.


Special notes: 

Do not use serum separator tubes.


Patient preparation: 

Patient should refrain from taking vitamins, mineral or herbal supplements for at least 1 week before specimen collection.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot at room temperature. Centrifuge serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection. Transfer to metal-free aliquot tube available from Referred Tests. Pour plasma or serum into aliquot. Do not use plastic transfer pipettes!


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 10 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Hemolysis • Plasma or serum not separated from cells within 2 hours • Samples submitted in non-trace element or non-acid washed containers.
