SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum (preferred) or plasma.


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
6 mL dark blue-top (K2 EDTA) tube
Specimen required: 

2 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 0.7 mL.


Special notes: 

Do not use serum separator tubes.


Patient preparation: 

Patient should refrain from taking vitamins, mineral or herbal supplements for at least 1 week before specimen collection.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge and immediately separate serum or plasma specimens from the cells into clean, plastic, trace element-free, screw-capped vial(s). Transport at room temperature. Do not pipette.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 10 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Specimens collected in serum separator tubes • Hemolysis • Serum or plasma not separated from cells • Sample submitted in non-trace metal-free or nonacid-washed containers
