SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

7 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine in a metal-free, acid-washed container; minimum 3 mL.


Special notes: 

Collect urine in acid-washed or metal-free plastic container. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).


Patient preparation: 

Patient should refrain from eating seafood and taking herbal supplements for at least three (3)days before specimen collection.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature or frozen specimen also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 5 days. Frozen: 14 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.
