SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
24-hour urine container (6N HCl added)
24-hour urine container with 25 mL of 50% acetic acid
Specimen required: 

10 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine in a metal-free, acid-washed container; minimum 3 mL.


Special notes: 

Preferred specimen is a 7 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine collected without preservative. Urine preserved with 25 ml of 50% acetic acid or 30 ml 6N HCl during collection is also acceptable. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 2 days. Refrigerated: 5 days. Frozen: 2 weeks.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.
