Synonyms:

TPAB, Thyroid Microsomal Antibody, Thyroid peroxidase antibody, Antimicrosomal antibodies, TPO autoantibody, Antithyroperoxidase, Thyroperoxidase antibody

Clinical significance:

The major thyroid autoimmune diseases are Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. In virtually all cases of Hashimoto's disease and in the majority of cases of Graves' disease cases, TPO autoantibodies are elevated. High levels of TPO autoantibodies in the context of hypothyroidism confirm the diagnosis of Hashimoto's disease.
