Prothrombin gene mutation,
Methodology:
Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Synonyms:
Factor II, factor II DNA analysis, prothrombin gene mutation, factor II PCR, factor II mutation, PGM PCR, PGM mutation, PGM DNA, factor II DNA, G20210A mutation
PPGM
Clinical significance:
The G20210A mutation in the prothrombin (factor II) gene is the second most common inherited risk factor for venous thrombosis and is associated with elevated prothrombin concentrations. Heterozygous, or individuals who have one copy of the mutation, are at a 3- to 6-fold increased risk for venous thrombosis. Homozygotes, or individuals who have two copies of the mutation, are at an even higher risk.
