SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:
Whole Blood

Lavender-top (K2 EDTA) microcollection tube
Specimen required:
6 mL whole blood; minimum 1 mL.
Special notes:
Specimen must be labeled with patient's first and last name, medical record number or some unique other identifier (e.g.,billing number, NOT date of birth). Date of collection and phlebotomist identification (full name or tech ID) must be available. Positive patient identification must be assured. For cord blood samples, order CDEV (Cord Evaluation) test battery for ABORH and DAT testing.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Do not centrifuge or aliquot. 
Transport temperature:
Room temperature preferred (less than 24 hours). If greater than 24 hours, specimen should be stored at 2-8°C.
Specimen stability:
Specimen must be less than 48 hours old for testing.
Rejection criteria:
Tube containing gel separator. Incomplete label ID (see specimen collection notes).

Clinical significance:
DAT determines if red cells have been coated in vivo with immunoglobulins (IgG only), complement (C3 only) or both. Primarily for investigation of hemolytic transfusion reaction, hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, autoimmune hemolytic anemia and drug-induced immune hemolysis.
