SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:
24-hour urine
Preferred collection container:
Specimen required:
10 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine; minimum 1.5 mL.
Special notes:
Collect 24-hour urine without preservative. Refrigerate during and after collection. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).
Patient preparation:
Do not include first morning specimen; collect all subsequent voidings. The last sample collected should be the first morning specimen voided the following morning at the same time as the previous morning's first voiding.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
Specimen stability:
Room Temperature: 8 hours. Refrigerated: 1 month. Frozen: 2 months.
Rejection criteria:
Received room temperature. Acidified urines are unacceptable.
