Specimen required:
2 mL aliquot serum or plasma; minimum 0.7 mL.
Special notes:
Do not use gel barrier tubes.
Patient preparation:
Patient should refrain from taking vitamin or mineral supplements for at least three (3) days before collection.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Centrifuge serum or plasma specimens within 1 hour of collection. Immediately separate serum or plasma specimens from the cells into special trace element collection vial(s). Transport as indicated. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated.
Specimen stability:
Room Temperature: 8 hours. Refrigerated: 14 days. Frozen: 1 month.
Rejection criteria:
Stability limits exceeded.

Clinical significance:
Selenium is an element of parental nutrition. Monitoring the selenium concentrations is useful in assessing parental nutrition, especially recent intake. Concentrations are also monitored in children with proprionic acidemia who require special diets with supplements.
