SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Serum or plasma: Centrifuge and aliquot. 
Transport temperature:
Tissue or Sputum: Frozen.
All others specimens: Refrigerated (cold packs).
Specimen stability:
Whole blood: Room temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: Unacceptable.
All other specimens: Room temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 30 days.
Rejection criteria:
Whole blood or Urine sent frozen. Samples collected in sodium or lithium heparin; calcium alginate swabs.

Clinical significance:
This test is used to determine the presence of adenovirus in a patient's specimen. Organisms may be detected by PCR prior to diagnosis by immunological methods. PCR provides more rapid results than other methods, including culture.
